Independent what-if simulations on a shared scope: recommended approach ?

Hi Fabric Planning team,

I attended FabCon, where Gopal invited me to post my question here.

A large customer in France is very interested in Fabric Planning, and one question keeps coming up: is it possible for several users to work on their own planning simulations independently, on a shared scope, without one person's changes impacting another person's work?

Gopal told me this is possible. Could you point me to the recommended approach and best practices for implementing this kind of solution?

The customer would also like to visualize the results of their simulations in charts, so any guidance on that part would be very welcome too.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi Shurik,

Yes, you can run independent simulations on a shared scope in Fabric Plan using Scenarios.

Here is how that workflow looks in practice:

  • Isolated sandboxes: Each planner creates a scenario under their own name and runs their simulations there. Scenarios are completely independent. Changes in one will never affect the base data or step on another planner's work.
  • Access control: The person who creates a scenario controls who can see or edit it through Hide Scenarios and Security, preventing unwanted changes to that simulation.
  • Concurrent work: Multiple planners can work in the same sheet simultaneously without impacting performance. If the system prompts a planner to "overwrite or discard" upon saving, they can safely choose overwrite. As long as no two planners are editing the exact same scenario, overwriting only commits that planner's changes to their own scenario.

For visualizing results, Intelligence sheets handle this well. Pull your scenarios into the Intelligence sheet using "From Sheets" to compare them directly against the baseline. Waterfall charts, variance bars, and matrix tables work particularly well here, especially with a slicer to toggle between scenarios, regions, or periods.

Hello,

Big thanks for your answer, that’s awesome.

I have two questions :

is it possible in such scenario to restrict modification on base scenario ? Is that a best practice in such use case ?

is there any video about Intelligence on what if scenario ?

Best regards

Hi Shurik,

Base is protected by default; you don’t need to configure anything. Simulations live inside their scenario and don’t alter Base or the underlying data source. The only way simulated values reach base is an explicit Copy to Base action from the Scenario toolbar.

The closest video is: Cash Flow Planning & Scenario Simulation. One thing to flag so it doesn’t trip you up: the simulation in that video is built with a simulation measure, not with scenarios. The mechanics differ from what I described earlier, so don’t expect to see scenario tabs. What it does cover, and what’s directly useful to you, is building the query and bringing it into an Intelligence sheet via From Sheets — that part works the same way regardless of whether your inputs come from a simulation measure or from scenarios. If you want more on the Intelligence side specifically, Intelligence 304 – Planning Integration goes deeper on that integration.
