Scaling KPI cards when the metric set differs per business unit

My KPI list isn't fixed. It changes depending on the business unit I'm looking at, so hand-placing a card per KPI per unit isn't going to hold up. I've been using Trellis Row on a single KPI card to split a metric by dimension, which handles splitting one metric across categories nicely.

What I can't work out is the other direction: driving the actual set of KPIs off the data so the cards change when the unit changes, rather than me maintaining a separate card each time. Has anyone got a card layout that adapts to the metric set per unit, or is trellis the only dimension-driven path here?

Yes, this can be achieved quite easily using Field Parameters.

Instead of creating and maintaining a separate KPI card for every business unit, you can create groups of measures and drive the KPI display dynamically based on user selection.

For example:

  • Unit A: Revenue, Profit, Margin
  • Unit B: Sales, Orders, Customers, Growth

Create a Field Parameter containing all available KPI measures and use a slicer (or a business unit selection) to control which KPI set is displayed. Once configured, the KPI cards will update automatically based on the selected unit.

If you need different number formats for each KPI, that's possible too. Each KPI can retain its own formatting, and when users switch between units, the appropriate formatting will be applied automatically.

The best part is that this setup only needs to be configured once for all available measures. After that, your KPI experience becomes fully dynamic and scales easily as business units and metrics evolve.

Bonus Tip:
For even more control, use Dynamic Format Strings in the Semantic Model. This allows each measure to display the correct format without creating separate measures for formatting.

Some common Dynamic Format String examples:

#,##0

Displays: 12,345

#,##0.00

Displays: 12,345.67

$#,##0.00

Displays: $12,345.67

0.0%

Displays: 23.4%

▲ #,##0;▼ #,##0

Displays positive and negative values with directional indicators.

Hope this helps!
